Aromatherapy Massage

Expectations?

Feeling exhausted? An aromatherapy massage might be exactly what you need to recharge your batteries if you’ve been running on empty. Massages are usually pretty relaxing, but it’s addition of essential oils that makes this treatment truly transformative.  Essential oils can make you feel energised, calm, or refreshed. Before you start, your therapist will have a full conversation with you to find out how you’re feeling emotionally and if you have any aches or pains. From there, your therapist can create the essential oil combination for your needs (along with a substance known as a “carrier oil,” which prevents the super-potent essential oils from irritating your skin), and your massage can start.

THE WAY IT WORKS

The effectiveness of essential oils is double. You’ll be relaxed by their lovely calming smell, but they also penetrate the skin and move quickly into your bloodstream, loosening any muscle pains and working on any suppressed tension you may have. Some people fall asleep during an aromatherapy massage because the oil has physical effects on their bodies and the smells travel through their super-sensitive nasal passages to their brains to help them feel calm.

Before you begin using essential oils, your therapist will have a thorough consultation with you to assess where you are emotionally and to check in on any aches and pains. Essential oils can do everything from energising to de-stressing or reinvigorating.
After an hour to an hour and a half, you’ll be ready to drift out, no matter how much you might not want to. Make sure to drink plenty of water afterward to keep your hydration levels topped off because all those oils can (conversely) cause a little internal dehydration.

Useful information

Aromatherapy massage can help with sleep problems, period pains that don’t go away, digestive problems, and eczema. However, because the essential oils are so strong, it’s not usually recommended for pregnant women or people with kidney problems.
